UK Student Dependent Guide

  • If you are a dependant of someone who is applying for a study visa to the UK, you may be eligible to apply for a Tier 4 dependant visa. To be eligible, you must be the spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, or child under the age of 18 of someone who has a valid Tier 4 student visa.

  • To apply for a Tier 4 dependant visa, you will need to provide evidence of your relationship with the main applicant, as well as proof of your financial dependency on them. You will also need to meet the English language requirements, unless you are from a majority English-speaking country or have completed a qualification in English equivalent to a UK degree.

  • You can apply for a Tier 4 dependant visa at the same time as the main applicant, or at a later stage. If you apply at a later stage, you will need to provide the main applicant’s visa reference number and your relationship to them.

  • The duration of the Tier 4 dependant visa will depend on the length of the main applicant’s visa. If the main applicant’s visa is valid for less than 12 months, the dependant visa will be granted for the same period. If the main applicant’s visa is valid for more than 12 months, the dependant visa will be granted for the full duration of the main applicant’s visa, plus an additional 4 months.

It is important to note that the requirements and process for a Tier 4 dependant visa can be complex, and it is recommended that you seek advice from a qualified immigration lawyer if you are considering applying for this type of visa.
